Somewhere around year eight, a teacher probably told you something about yourself. You're a visual learner, she said, or an auditory one, or – if you were the sort who couldn't sit still – kinaesthetic. A label arrived, you accepted it, and it quietly rewrote how you thought about your own brain for the next several decades.
There's just one problem. It isn't true.
The "learning styles" idea – that each of us has a dominant channel through which we absorb information best, and that lessons should be matched to it – has been tested properly, repeatedly, by researchers who actually wanted it to work. The consistent finding is that it doesn't. Matching the delivery method to your supposed style produces no measurable improvement in what you retain. None. Teaching a self-described visual learner through pictures instead of words doesn't help them learn more; it just makes them feel more comfortable, which is a different thing entirely and rather less useful than it sounds.
The research has been saying this since at least the late 1970s. A review in 2008 – by Pashler and colleagues, about as thorough as these things get – concluded that the evidence simply wasn't there. Other researchers followed. The answer kept coming back the same.
And yet. Walk into almost any primary school staffroom and you'll find laminated charts. Ask most adults how they learn best and they'll answer with a category. The theory has been debunked so many times it should be exhausted by now, and instead it seems to be flourishing.
Why does an idea that doesn't work stay so firmly bolted to the wall? Partly because it arrived wearing the right costume: scientific-sounding vocabulary (modalities, processing channels) attached to something that felt personally true. People recognise themselves in it. Of course you've always preferred diagrams – you can picture your childhood bedroom in extraordinary detail! That self-recognition isn't evidence, though. It's just the warmth of a label fitting comfortably.
There's also the small matter of teacher training, where the theory embedded itself in the 1990s and has been quietly reproducing ever since. An idea that enters the curriculum becomes the thing that gets taught to the people who teach other people. By the time anyone thinks to check whether it works, three generations of lesson plans have already been built around it.
What the research does show – and this is the part that got quietly ignored in favour of the catchier version – is that almost everyone learns better when they encounter the same material through multiple forms, and when they're made to retrieve and apply it rather than just sit and receive it. Not matched delivery. More delivery. Reading around a subject, following tangents, arriving at the same idea from six different directions – that's actually closer to how memory consolidates knowledge than any carefully style-coded worksheet. The kind of happy meandering you do when something genuinely catches your interest, reading about the sun and ending up three tabs deep into solar cycles you didn't expect to care about – that's not an accident of personality type. That's just what learning looks like when nobody's flattened it into a category.
The real tragedy isn't the theory itself. Harmless as a party conversation, mostly. The tragedy is what it does to people quietly: the ones who decided early that they weren't readers because a teacher once told them they learned by doing, or who never tried making notes because apparently that was for auditory types. A myth about the mind that makes people smaller is worth retiring, however comfortable it's become.
