The Lump Sum vs. The Slow Leak

Imagine two people equally bad with money. One blows a fortune upfront, then lives quite cheaply for years. The other nurses a modest purchase price but quietly haemorrhages cash through every tank of fuel, every service, every set of brake pads. Neither is irresponsible, exactly. They just have completely different relationships with when they spend.

Buying a car is surprisingly similar. Whether an EV or a diesel suits you better has less to do with which one is "cheaper" in some abstract sense, and more to do with which kind of spender you actually are.

The EV asks for its money at the door

An EV costs more to buy. That's just the current reality, and you're also likely spending on a home wallbox charger – call it £800 to £1,000 installed – before you've turned a wheel.

The electricity itself, though, is dramatically cheaper than diesel per mile, particularly if you charge overnight on a cheaper tariff. Servicing is genuinely simpler: no oil changes, fewer moving parts, regenerative braking that barely touches the pads. The EV front-loads almost every significant cost. After that, it's relatively quiet.

The diesel bleeds slowly and cheerfully

A diesel, by contrast, is perfectly happy to let you feel like you got a bargain on the day. The sticker price looks manageable. But then: fuel (and diesel is not cheap), a more complex engine that wants regular servicing, DPF filters that clog if you only do short trips, and the fact that diesel resale values have been quietly softening for years as buyers grow nervous about whatever the next clean air zone announcement might bring.

You're not paying a lot at once. You're paying in instalments, forever.

Where it actually tips

The maths only really resolves once you know three things about yourself.

First, your annual mileage. High-mileage drivers, say 15,000 miles or more a year, tend to recoup an EV's purchase premium faster because the per-mile savings stack up quickly – but below 8,000 miles, that crossover point stretches out to where a cheaper diesel might well win on total cost over your ownership period.

Second, your charging situation. If you can charge at home overnight, an EV's running costs are genuinely low. Rely on public rapid chargers instead – common if you're in a flat with no driveway – and the numbers reshuffle considerably, because rapid charging is far more expensive per kilowatt-hour.

Third, how long you keep cars. EVs reward loyalty. Sell after two years and you've paid the premium without banking enough fuel savings to offset it. The honest answer is that "which is cheaper" is the wrong question. The right one is "which matches how I spend?" One asks for a lump sum and returns calm. The other offers calm upfront and takes it back in small pieces, for years.
